Check out our imporoved 2x6" wood railing design. Shop drawings are shown here and pictures below.
The above system will add a total of 7" to your rail system height. It is designed for use with our 4" spindles. The most common setup is to use the above 2x6" rail system, our 4x26" porch spindles, and a 3" toe space (sometimes called a kick space). This gives you a 36" handrail height which is commonly required by codes.
2x6" Porch Rail, with sloped-top bottom rail, subrail, & skirt. The first place that wood rot sets in is at the bottom of the spindles. Using this rail system with a sloped-top bottom rail helps shed water and prevent rot. When using this rail, be sure to specify bottom notching on your porch spindles.

2x6" Port Orford Cedar top rail. Note the trough (or groove). This allows for fast and easy installation with or without the use of a subrail.

The use of a subrail allows the builder to hide all fasteners, as well as adding strength and height to the system.

This was a fun project for a home in Woodbury, GA. The home has five, yes that is 5, porches. Four of them have curved portions for rounded verandas. Here are a few pictures of some of the curved rail before it was crated for shipment. It is the same design as our 4-piece Porch Rail System in Port Orford Cedar shown above, except all the pieces were curved using the proprietary method developed right here in our shop. We look forward to sharing pictures of this beautiful home as they come in.

Below are some other styles of railing we've made. Skirting not only strengthens the rail system, but makes for a more robust Victorian look as well.

Often our customers are looking for a more substantial bottom rail. Millwork of this size is often made hollow by boxing several pieces of wood, or by using small strips of wood that have been finger jointed and laminated. You simply will not find a bottom rail like our 4x6" solid wood Douglas Fir. The second picture gives a good closeup of the design detail and grain structure. You'll see examples of this product in use on our PORCH GALLERY page.

Spandrels
2x4x10" Redwood Spandrel. This spandrel uses our 2x7" A6 Redwood Accent Spindles, and our 2x4" Redwood rail. This system is now available in Port Orford Cedar instead.

Flooring
Our 2x6" Tongue & Groove Flooring in Port Orford Cedar will help complete your porch experience. It is "select tight knot" which means it is a very high quality wood that allows knots as long as they are tight and not unsightly. Because of Port Orford Cedars light color, it can be stained or painted to your liking.

3" custom Douglas Fir Balltops: we have repeatedly made these for a flagpole shop in Adirondack, NY to use on the tops of flag poles. God bless the USA! The grain structure of Douglas Fir is so beautiful it's almost painful to paint it.

Katherine V. of Derby, New York writes: "[The exterior spindles and railing] came yesterday, I absolutely love them. Wanted you to know that and how impressed we are with the quality. We will definitely be using you for our two back porches in the spring! Look forward to working with you again!" 10/7/2008
